Fruity Apple-Compote

Apple Compote

To this day my oldest daughter loves to eat this healthy fresh made Apple-Compote, and that warm. My preferred fruit choice is the Fuji apple, and best organic Fuji apple. You can sometimes obtain it at local farmer’s markets or in most local grocery-stores, in the organic food section of fresh produce isle. For an apple compote that suits your taste, choose any apple you like to eat either raw or cooked.

water, brown sugar, vanilla extract, organic apple, cinnamon (optional)

Ingredients for two portions:

1 organic Fuji apple,
5 TB water,
2 tsp brown sugar,
1/3 tsp vanilla extract,
1/4 tsp cinnamon (optional).

apple compote sizzling with cinnamon

Peel the fruit and cut the apple in dice size. In a saucer add water, brown sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon (optional), and apple dices (optional a teaspoon of raisins). Heat up over medium heat and cook for 10 minutes by stirring every-so-often. Remove from heat and serve, or chill for a later consumption.

There are a variety of fruits that you can make into compote, for example: pears, peaches, apricots, plums.

Wow, Package arrived!

Wow, can you believe it! Yesterday, we have received the package about a natural nutrition supplement made of fruit or vegetable juices. It arrived earlier then I expected. Everything is here and a questionnaire for our children was filled out. My husband and I decided that our girls are participating in our experiment as well.

Please, follow our experience with this supplement on facebook and like my page. Don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

After reading the welcome letter and determining the amount of this supplement we are to take a day (two capsules for my husband and I, eight chewables for my teenager, and four chewable for my younger daughter), we had our dinner and started the intake of this nutrition supplement.

Here are the changes coming to my mind that I would like to see happen with this supplement:

For my youngest daughter: a diminishing urge for sweets, a stronger immune-system, better focus, and a better information retain-ability.

For my oldest daughter: a stronger immune-system, more energy, more focus, a change in her diet (she is avoiding vegetables), and better skin (acne).

For my husband: more energy, with more energy a loss of weight, better memory, better immune-system, better eating choices (he is not far from being diabetic, and on the verge of high cholesterol), improvement of his skin problems (i.e. athletes-foot).

And lastly for myself: more energy, better memory, stronger immune-system, eliminating my little depression episodes, decrease of arthritis pain, restful nights, and if my vision would get slightly better so I don’t have to get glasses, I would not say no.

With this supplement, I am hoping to get back to my daily tasks done with much more enthusiasm and satisfaction then I have been having lately. Getting back to a healthier diet plan than I have been, in recent years, would be a win/win situation.

I will keep you updated on our experiences with this product, and will also reveal the product in question, if it is a product worth revealing.

Please, show me your support by following me on facebook and liking my page. Don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Nutrition Supplement?

My husband is always looking for an easy solution to loose weight and energize himself. He likes to try all these products like vitamin supplements, or meal replacement, or diet pills. You understand what I mean.

In my opinion, if you eat your healthy meals and snacks consisting mostly of vegetables and fruits, and best with organic products, go for walks, or exercise, you should be doing great. Being aware that it is not always possible to live this way, in our fast pacing  times, we do what we can with the resources we have available. But I have always been reluctant to take vitamins in capsules made by the pharmaceutical industry. As long as we can avoid taking medicines; we’d rather stick out a cold than trying to mask the effects with drugs.

Check out the  video of my experience at this meeting.

As I get older, I realize that more and more little ailments are submerging. Fatigue is a daily occurrence, arthritis is starting in my fingers, and depression sets in more often. My husband is also plagued by fatigue in addition to his obesity. Yes, well, I could loose a few pounds as well.

This past week, my husband convinced me to accompany him to an informational meeting about nutrition supplement. As reluctant as I was to go, I am glad to have gone and collected some information about it. We ordered the nutrition supplement and are awaiting the package's delivery within the next two weeks.

Safe Cutting Board: Glass, Ceramic, Wood, or Plastic

A cutting board is an item needed in any kitchen. There are always meats, vegetables, or other food products needing to be chopped or cut. The main choices available are glass, ceramic, wood, or plastic.

Plastic boards can be found in various colors, thick or thin and are the most affordable cutting boards. These boards are easily cleaned and sanitized. They are also susceptible to cuts and scrapes. Therefore, there is no guarantee that chips of the plastic do not get into your food.

Glass or ceramic boards, are beautiful for food presentations, durable, heat resistant, and easy to be cleaned. As a chopping or cutting board they have a rather unpleasant sound emission (high pitch scratching or squeaking). The hard surface can dull the blade of knifes.

Wooden boards are the oldest form of cutting boards used and made of hard wood (best: maple or bamboo). Those boards need to be thoroughly cleaned after usage. Since the surface is smoother, the board can scar easily.  These boards can be costly. When a board has too many cuts, you simply shave down a layer. Most chefs have a preference for wood boards.

Personally, I use wooden boards and separate the boards for each type of food I am preparing. Wood feels smooth and warm, not forgetting its natural origin. My focus is to use natural products that work well with my choice of organic food products, like fruits, vegetables, and meats, as much as I can. After the usage of the board, cleaning and sanitizing the boards is essential, and consider discarding the ones that have deep cracks.
The multitude of boards makes it a choice of preference and priorities, of affordability or durability.

Conventional vs. Alternative Medicine

Spending my adolescent and young adult years in Germany, my belief of natural remedies and alternative medicine in co-relation to conventional medicine was born. It is not only the bodies reaction that should be treated, but also finding the cause of the problem should be taken into consideration.

The way I understand conventional medicine: The students of medicine learn about symptoms, diseases, chemical reactions, psychology, and finding the right medicine to prescribe as a “magic potion” that relieves your pain and removes illnesses.

My understanding on alternative medicine: The healer finds out what causes the problem and treats you from the origin to solve your problem. It is a process that takes time.

The ideal would be that Conventional and alternative medicine should walk the distance hand in hand.

My husband introduced me to this amazing video where Physicist Dr. Amit Goswami, a professor at Quantum University, gives you his brief description of Alternative vs. Conventional Medicine .

Check it out and leave a comment on my blog-post to express your opinion or view on that topic. I will release comments that are valuable to this topic’s discussion.

Staying Fit with Zumba!

Beginning of the year, I wanted to cancel my membership to a fitness center, because I was not really using the facility that often. The front desk person wanted to know my reason for the cancellation and simply asked if I tried the Zumba class they offered.

She convinced me to try it out and thereafter, cancel the membership if it did not please me. Well, little did I know, I got hooked to the Zumba class. This was not on my New Year’s resolution list, but I am happy about this activity.

Zumba is a fitness program that consists of rhythmic movements to Latin-inspired music, like salsa, reggaeton and merengue. The movements related to dance-moves, are a great work-out of the abs, gluts and thighs.

The most important part: Time flies, when you are having fun in class, and your body gets in shape with it. It works for me… and believe it or not my “booties” seem to get firmer and my legs tighter.

Travel Glass Bottles

Check out what I found! Amazon.com has exactly what I am looking for:

The travel glass bottles that you can bring along  with a silicon sleeve to protect the glass from breaking too easily. These glass bottles come in various sizes from 9 to 22-ounzes and silicon sleeve colors.

You can take your water or tea with you to your office, work out studio, or prepare your child’s school-lunch and add a glass bottle with their beverage of choice!

Sure you will have to be careful, it is still a breakable bottle, but it is manageable. This travel glass bottle is ideal for the health conscious and eco-friendly individuals.

My All Time Favorite Healing Potion: Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is known as a pain relief, a calming agent used against insomnia, and fights inflammation such as rheumatism, arthritis, or acne. It is one of the must have in your home-pharmacy. Chamomile is also one of the safest and widely used herbs. There is a variety of Chamomile i.e.: German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Sweet Chamomile.

Most grocery stores carry Chamomile tea already packaged in little portioned bags. My preference though is the dried Chamomile flowers you can buy loosely at a holistic store or organic product store. What about growing it yourself? The best way to grow Chamomile is to plant or sow it in your garden. When blooming, pick the flowers, they will usually grow back more abundantly. You cut it back for the winter in cold areas.

Used as a tea, Chamomile can help with an upset stomach, with internal inflammations, against insomnia, as well as cleansing the kidneys, bladder, and/or liver. Drink a cup or two when you feel the need.

My youngest daughter recently had an infected ingrown toe-nail. As our favorite doctor was not in the office, we chose to bathe her foot in hand-warm Chamomile tea. The swelling went down and her toe looked better. When our physician returned, we visited the office and got the all clear. This re-affirmed my believe of this herbal remedy.

The tea can be useful as a rinse or mouthwash, when inflammations occur inside your mouth. In some cases, people receiving chemotherapy treatments to the head region are using this gentle method to ease the pain of inflammations in the mouth.

You can use it as a wash for skin inflammations, itchy eyes, or sunburns. Or splash it for five to ten minutes onto your hemorrhoids a few times a day. You will feel a relief.

Some use Chamomile tea as a hair conditioner. When used regularly blond hair will lighten.

Another way is to use the steam of the tea mixture for facial cleansing or inhalation, i.e.  to clear your sinuses. Let the Chamomile tea stand 5 to 10 minutes before you use it. Use a towel over your head to have the most effect. You can harm your face or breathing ways if it is too hot. Just be careful!

Warning:
You should always consult with your physician for any illness you may have. A treatment with Chamomile is an alternative or a gentler version to certain medicines, and at times can be performed in addition with your doctor’s consent.
To maintain the healing properties you should use Chamomile only when needed. My thought is, that the body gets used to the herbs and healing would possibly take longer.
Few people are allergic to Chamomile. In case of an allergy, please find another herb that can help you with your need.

As Spring is the time to rejuvenate, and clean the house, let fresh air in, I present to you:

My Own Little Cleansing Time:

Every Spring, to welcome the season, I would make a cleansing regiment with Chamomile tea. In one liter of boiling water poured into a pitcher, add about one heaped teaspoon of dried Chamomile flowers. Let it stand for three to five minutes. Run the mixture through a strainer. Let the tea cool to a drinkable temperature and drink it instead of water. Do this for about two weeks. After a few days of drinking the tea, I usually have a tingling feeling going through my body. My interpretation: It is my body’s cleansing reaction.

HURRAY! I AM READY FOR SPRING!

Freshly Pressed Lemonade

Let me introduce you to a nice, healthy refreshment; my version of a zesty lemonade. This is my children’s and my favorite: After the first taste of sweetened lemon enjoy the mild honey aftertaste.

Use the following ingredients:

1 liter or 4 cups of filtered water
1 freshly squeezed organic lemon
1 tablespoon of organic honey

mix the ingredients together well and chill for half an hour.

Enjoy!

For a prickly version use sparkling water instead of plain water.

As alternatives in taste and ingredients use either organic limes, organic brown sugar, or regular sugar, and also the amount of sugar can be altered to please your palate.

We are growing sugar cane in our yard therefore we cut strips of sugar cane and put them in the lemon and water mixture.

It is best to use a glass pitcher and serve the lemonade in  a drinking glass as it does not alter the taste and does not react with the acids of the lemons. For more information about glass, plastic, or metals read the following posts: Glass or Plastic and/or Metal Bottles

Have fun creating and tasting your own lemonade!

Is a Metal Drinking Bottle Safe?

Metal containers are strong, and well, almost indestructible. It makes sense to use a bottle, or container made of metal.

But we shouldn’t forget… most metals also react with the air surrounding us: steel rusts i. e. Therefore, most metal cans, and containers have some sort of lining on the inside to prevent oxidation or corrosion, most of them have plastic linings. And there we are, plastic brings along its own problematic attributes, as discussed in my previous post Glass or Plastic?

Well, what does it mean? … in essence when in doubt stay away from metal drinking bottles, and cans. Using a glass/ceramic jar or container to store cooked foods or as beverage bottles is the way to go.  The taste of foods and beverages doesn’t change in glass or ceramic. Sure they can break if handled inappropriately. But by paying a little attention where we leave our glass and ceramic containers… our health is what counts.

My grandmother used to say: “Don’t leave the leftovers in the metal pots, and pans. Store them in ceramic or glass containers.” My grandma was a wise woman.
